My apologies for not writing a post in a while. Since our last blog post students have done quite a lot. After finishing the short story unit with a short story test that assessed reading comprehension. Students then participated in a grade wide write, in which their written expression abilities were assessed. Students across the grade were given a common prompt and had to respond to it by either writing an expository essay or a personal narrative.
We are now currently preparing for speech day by learning about the different speech types they can use in their presentation/speech. A new speech type that they are introduced to in grade 10 is the After Dinner Speech in which they are to imagine they are the keynote speaker for an imaginary audience of their choosing. They are to choose an organization or society that have a common interest. For example they may be speaking in front of the "left handed society," "the police academy" or "superheroes anonymous." They are to organize a lighthearted speech that may touch on serious, important or real issues, but do so through the perspective of the persona they have decided to take on. Below is an example of an after dinner speech. Students may or may not choose this new format, as they also have the choice of presenting a persuasive speech, ted talk, interpretative reading or dramatic interpretation, which they learned about last year.
